ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Gonzaga University and St. John's University, combatants in the 2000 NCAA Tournament second round, will meet in the final first-round game of the 2001 Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout on Thanksgiving.
The game, to tip off at 9 p.m. PST, will be televised live on ESPN.
The tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 21, with Indiana Univeristy facing host University of Alaska-Anchorage, and Marquette University meeting the University of Tennessee.
The other Thanksgiving first round game has Oregon State University taking on the University of Texas. Gonzaga will meet either OSU or Texas on Friday, Nov. 23, at either 3 p.m. PST (loser's game) or 6:30 p.m. (semifinal).
The championship game, to be televised live on ESPN, will be Saturday, Nov. 24, at 9 p.m. PST.
The Bulldogs topped St. John's 82-76 in Tucson, Ariz., in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament, vaulting Gonzaga into its second straight Sweet 16 appearance.
"This is one of the great tournaments left," Gonzaga head coach Mark Few said. "We have an opportunity to go to Alaska and play three quality opponents in a neutral-court situation."
Four of the eight men's teams in this year's field advanced to NCAA Tournament last season - Gonzaga (26-7, regional semifinals), Texas (25-9, first round), Indiana (21-13, first round) and Tennessee (22-11, first round). Rounding out the men's field will be host UAA (19-8), Marquette (15-14), St. John's (14-15) and Oregon State (10-20).
