Olynyk Drafted 13th By Dallas; Traded To Boston Celtics

SPOKANE, Wash. – Former Gonzaga University standout Kelly Olynyk’s dream of playing in the NBA came true Thursday night when he was selected as the 13th overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks.

Immediately following the selection the Mavs traded Olynyk to Boston, the Celtics sending No. 16 pick Lucas Nogueira. a 7-0, 220-pound center from Brazil, and two future second-round draft picks to the Mavericks to move up.

He joins Dan Dickau as another Bulldog who was traded on draft night. Dickau was the 28th and final pick of the first round by the Sacramento Kings and was traded to the Atlanta Hawks before the 2002 NBA Draft was over.

Olynyk became the highest Bulldog draft choice since Austin Daye was the 15th overall pick of the Detroit Pistons in 2009.

The native of Kamloops, British Columbia, who redshirted the 2011-12 season, was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year this past season. He averaged 17.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 1.7 assists/game and 1.1 blocks/game in helping Gonzaga to a 32-3 overall record, a 16-0 WCC mark, the WCC Tournament title and a 15th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

His stellar output on the court garnered him many accolades. The junior was named Associated Press All-America, U.S. Basketball Writers Association All-America, Sporting News All-America, National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-America and was tabbed as the third Zag to be named a John R. Wooden Award Top Five honoree in the program’s history and the first since 2006.

The 7-0 forward from Kamloops, B.C., was also named the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball as well as being named to the Scholar-Athlete Team. Olynyk, who graduated in December with a 3.53 GPA in accounting, is currently finishing his first semester of the MBA program at Gonzaga. He was named to the Capital One All-Academic First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Olynyk is the fifth Zag to be drafted in the first round, joining John Stockton in 1984 (16th overall pick, Utah Jazz), Dickau in 2002 (28th overall pick, Sacramento Kings), Adam Morrison in 2006 (3rd overall pick, Charlotte Bobcats) and Daye in 2009 (15th overall pick, Detroit Pistons). Ian Mahinmi was a first round pick and 28th overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 2005. Mahinmi had signed a letter-of-intent to attend Gonzaga for the 2005-06 season but never enrolled in school.
