Pangos Named To Canada's Development Men's National Team

TORONTO – Gonzaga University junior guard Kevin Pangos is among the 12 student-athletes Canada Basketball has selected to represent Canada as the Development Men’s National Team (DMNT) at the 2013 FISU Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.

The DMNT recently took part in the Four Nations’ International Invitational Tournament – an 11-day tournament through central China. In addition to the host nation, Canada played collegiate squads from the United States and Latvia, finishing with a perfect 9-0 record.

Pangos was again the quarterback for the Bulldogs this past season, averaging 11.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg and a team-leading 3.3 assists/game. The native of Holland Landing, Ontario, shot 41.7 percent from 3-point range on 78-for-187. He is the only player to start all 35 games as the Zags posted a program-best 32-3 record and were ranked No. 1 in the country in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. He was named to the All-West Coast Conference team.

Former Bulldog Mangisto Arop, who transferred to Indiana State University after playing two seasons for the Zags in 2010 and ’11, was also named to the 12-man squad.

Rowan Barrett, assistant general manager and executive vice-president of the Senior Men’s Program, commented on the upcoming competition by saying, “Our student team has done well in their preparations thus far under the leadership of Jay Triano and his staff. We look forward to our team being very competitive and representing Canada with great pride on the international stage.”

Also known as the World University Games, the competition will kick-off for Team Canada on July 7 with a match-up against Sweden. The Summer Universiade – the largest sporting event outside of the Olympic Games – will see the best student-athlete teams across the world compete in a variety of sports. The men’s quarterfinals begin Sunday, July 14, with the semifinal match-ups slated for the following day and the finale tips-off Tuesday evening.
