Kyle Wiltjer Officially Joins Gonzaga Men's Basketball Team
SPOKANE, Wash. – Kyle Wiltjer is officially a member of Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team.
His signed copy of an athletic financial aid agreement was received Saturday by Gonzaga officials, making official the announcement the 6-10 junior forward made Friday of his intention to leave the University of Kentucky after two seasons and transfer to the Bulldogs.
“We are very excited to have Kyle come into our program. He is a young man with high character, an excellent student and has already proven himself to be a very good college basketball player. We look forward to helping him develop to his full potential at Gonzaga,” Bulldog head coach Mark Few said Saturday.
Wiltjer, a native of Portland, Ore., and a graduate of Jesuit High, was recruited by the Bulldogs out of high school but chose to sign with Kentucky.
Last season as a sophomore he was voted the Southeastern Conference Sixth Man of the Year, averaging 7.3 ppg and 2.8 rpg. As a freshman on Kentucky’s national championship team he averaged 5.0 ppg and 1.8 rpg. In his two seasons at Kentucky he went 90-for-231 from 3-point range, his 39.0 percent from 3-point range ranking 15th on the all-time Kentucky list. He was 55-for-155 from beyond the arc this past season.
Wiltjer recently competed for the Canadian Men’s National Developmental Team at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. He holds dual citizenship because his father, Greg, is Canadian and played for Canada in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Among his teammates at the World University Games, where Canada finished fourth, was current Bulldog junior Kevin Pangos who hails from Holland Landing, Ontario.
Wiltjer, a former McDonald’s All-American, will have to sit out the upcoming season per NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2014-15 season.
