Turiaf, France In Euro U20 Quarterfinals

VILNIUS, Lithuania - Gonzaga University sophomore forward Ronny Turiaf and his French teammates have advanced to the quarterfinals of the European Championships U20 in Lithuania.

France, 3-2 and tied with Spain for third in Group B, will meet Group A No. 1 Slovenia on Friday with a semifinal berth at stake. France is the No. 4 seed by virtue of a loss to Spain. Slovenia tied Yugoslavia in Group A, but won the head-to-head meeting.

Turiaf, who burst on the Gonzaga scene last season as a freshman, has had an outstanding championship. He is averaging 17.0 ppg, 10.8 rpg and is 30-for-57 from the field for 52.6 percent. He has posted three double-doubles - 20 points and 11 rebounds in an 88-75 win over Russia, 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 91-84 setback to Croatia and 13 points and 21 boards in an 84-72 victory over Ukraine. France assured its spot in the quarterfinals with an 80-71 win over Israel in which Turiaf scored 19 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. He also scored 12 points and had 6 rebounds in the tourney opener, an 89-53 loss to Spain.

The native of Le Robert, Martinique, who averaged 7.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg for the Bulldogs last season, is also averaging 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks in the tournament.

Russia won Group B and will meet Group A No. 4 Lithuania in the quarterfinals. Croatia, No. 2 in Group B, will meet Group A No. 3 Greece, and Group B No. 3 Spain will face Group A No. 2 Yugoslavia in the other quarterfinal.
