Bulldogs Set To Return To Maui Invitational
Aug. 11, 2004
MAUI, HAWAII - Tournament operator KemperSports Marketing announced this week that West Coast Conference powerhouse and perennial NCAA Tournament competitor Gonzaga University has joined what could be the finest field ever assembled in an early season tournament - the 2005 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Hosted by Chaminade - featuring six former national champions: Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland and Michigan State.
The spot became available when DePaul University requested a move from 2005 to a later Maui date since it will be joining 2005 Maui competitor Connecticut in the newly configured Big East Conference beginning with the 2005-2006 season. Gonzaga last competed in Maui in 2002, taking fourth place behind the champion Indiana Hoosiers.
Another outstanding field is slated to hit center court at the Lahaina Civic Center for this Thanksgiving Week's 2004 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. Joining host Chaminade at this year's season kick-off are BYU, Iowa, Louisville, North Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas.
The 2004 EA SPORTS Maui Invitational takes place November 22-24 at the intimate 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center on the island paradise of Maui, less than 1,000 yards from the Pacific Ocean. To date, EA SPORTS Maui Invitational teams have made their way to a phenomenal post-season mark of 193 of 260 Final Four positions, 50 of 65 national runner-up spots and 49 of 65 NCAA championships.
ESPN will again broadcast the tournament, with a minimum of nine games televised live. This translates to national television exposure for all eight participating teams, a minimum of two games televised nationally for six teams, and all three games televised nationwide for four of the eight teams in the tournament.
EA SPORTS, the world's leading interactive entertainment software maker, has been the title sponsor of the Maui Invitational since 2001.
Other tournament sponsors include the Maui Visitors Bureau, County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation and Hawaii Tourism Authority. The Westin Maui, Sheraton Maui and Kapalua Bay Hotel serve as host hotels for the thousands of boosters who accompany their teams to Maui each year.
