WCCTV Takes A Summer Look At Gonzaga Men's Basketball
Aug. 12, 2010
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - In what was suppose to be a transition year, the Zags proved during the 2009-10 season that they don't rebuild, they reload. The reloaded Zags enter this season with their sights set on an unprecedented 11th conference title and another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
Gonzaga has won 10 straight WCC regular season titles, which is the longest active conference title winning streak in the nation and is tied for the second longest in NCAA history (tied with UNLV [Big West, 1983-92] and UConn [Yankee, 1951-60]), trailing only UCLA's 13 Pacific-10 Conference titles from 1967-79.
Gonzaga University (27-7) has hit the 20-win plateau for 13 straight seasons and 16 times in the last 17 years. Gonzaga head coach Mark Few has never not won 20 games in his 11 years on the Bulldog bench.
Gonzaga has become a staple in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Big Dance 12 consecutive years. The Zags' string of 12 straight NCAA Tournament appearances is tied for the fourth longest active streak in the nation.
If a team is going to beat Gonzaga, chances are it won't happen on the Bulldogs' home court, the McCarthey Athletic Center, where the Zags own a 75-4 (94.9 winning percentage) record since it opened for the 2004-05 season.
Gone is Matt Bouldin, the 2010 WCC Player of the Year, but the Zags return six of their next seven top scorers, including 2010 Newcomer of the Year, Elias Harris, a standout sophomore forward who opted to return to Gonzaga for his second season instead of entering the NBA Draft. Also back is senior guard Steven Gray, who was named Co-MVP with Matt Bouldin of the Maui Invitational in leading the Bulldogs to the tournament title.
Junior Robert Sacre returns to anchor the middle for the Zags. In addition to averaging 10.3 ppg and 5.4 rpg, Sacre also swatted away 65 shots, the second most on the Bulldogs' single-season list.
