Sacre, Olynyk, Harris To Play In FIBA World Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's basketball will be well represented at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey.

Canada Basketball announced Robert Sacre and Kelly Olynyk have made the "Road Warriors" Senior Men's National Team, while Elias Harris will play for Germany.

Sacre will be a junior for the Bulldogs this season, while Olynyk and Harris return for their sophomore campaigns.

Canada is assigned to Group D, along with Lebanon, Lithuania, France, New Zealand and Spain, while Germany is in Group A with Angola, Argentina, Australia, Jordan and Serbia. Canada's group play will be held in Izmir, while Germany's games will be played in Kayseri. Australia defeated Jordan in the Group A opener Friday, while Lithuania downed New Zealand in a Group D opener. The United States is in Group B.

Saturday's schedule has Canada facing Lebanon and Germany taking on Argentina.

The format for the FIBA World Championship has the top four teams from each preliminary round group advancing to the round of 16 and play to advance to the quarterfinal round. Games in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals are scheduled to be held from September 8-12 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Sacre and Olynyk are both former members of Canada's Junior Men's National Team. Olynyk played for the Junior Men's National Team last summer at the FIBA U19 World Championships in New Zealand, the Canadians taking seventh place.

Harris played for Germany in the 2009 European Championships.
