Aug. 29, 2000
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - It was announced today by the WCC Presidents Council that the West Coast Conference will change the format of the conference basketball tournament to a six-team per gender, merit-based format.
The 2001 tournament will remain a common site event in which all eight men's and women's teams will participate. This year's tournament will take place at the newly erected Jenny Craig Pavilion on the campus of the University of San Diego, March 1-5. The approved changes will take effect for the 2002 and 2003 tournaments, after which the matter will be reviewed.
The format of the conference basketball tournament will be as follows:
A. Six teams per gender will participate, and each gender will follow the same format.
The proposed days that the 2002 basketball championship will take place are Tuesday (first round)-Friday (semifinals)-Sunday (finals) for the women and Wednesday-Saturday-Monday for the men. Those days will be reviewed before the final decision is made on when the 2003 basketball tournament will be held.
"This merit-based format gives us the opportunity to reward our regular season champion," Associate Commissioner Don Ott said. "It also enables us to take our premier event to any of our campuses."
