Gonzaga-Saint Joseph's To Meet In Season Opener
Sept. 12, 2003
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University and Saint Joseph's University have matched up the last two seasons to produce two of the most exciting regular season games of each season. That rivalry will continue once again this season as the two Jesuit universities will face off in the 2003 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Nov. 14 in Madison Square Garden in New York City. It will serve as the regular-season opener for both clubs which are expected to open the season nationally ranked.
The Bulldogs will be led by 2002 honorable mention All-American guard Blake Stepp while Saint Joseph's will again have the services of All-American candidate Jameer Nelson at point guard.
Two seasons ago the Bulldogs carried a No. 22 national ranking into Philadelphia on New Year's Eve and edged the Hawks, 83-80, on a Dan Dickau 3-pointer at the buzzer. Saint Joseph's paid a visit to The Kennel last season and used a Nelson put-back basket to win 79-78 in overtime. The Hawks win ended Gonzaga's 29-game home winning streak, the nation's third longest home court winning streak at the time.
Tip-off for the game is scheduled for around 9 p.m. or 30 minutes following the opening game of the doubleheader between the University of Alabama and the University of Pittsburgh.
