Coaches Vs. Cancer Raises $750,000
Sept. 13, 2007
SPOKANE, Wash. - The sixth annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Classic and BasketBALL Gala held at the end of August raised more than $750,000 to help the fight against cancer.
Gonzaga head men's basketball coach Mark Few and his wife Marcy spearhead the event which has now raised $2.95 million since 2002. The three-day event includes a pledge drive, two-day golf tournament and black-tie gala and auction.
"We feel very fortunate to have the support of the Spokane Community and the generous sponsors that continue to invest in our event year after year," Mark Few said. "They are starting to turn the corner and uncover possible cures for cancer, but there is still a long way to go. Our goal is to help win that fight."
In addition, Coaches vs. Cancer procured more than 180 Camp Goodtime scholarships, a week-long camp geared to children ages 7-17 who are battling cancer. Proceeds from the pledge drive go toward the operational costs of the local Ronald McDonald House. The event also raised $45,000 to help fund the local Mammogram Mobile that travels throughout the community and to rural areas providing women with access to preventative care.
"Those who attend the event are always so generous," added Marcy Few. "It always amazes me what we are able to accomplish in the course of three days."
The black-tie gala was once again emceed by ESPN's Jay Bilas with contributions throughout the weekend from Neil Everett and Fran Fraschilla, both of ESPN. Other celebrity guests included Lute Olson (University of Arizona), Mark Turgeon (Texas A&M University), Doug Wojcik (University of Tulsa), Mark Rypien (former NFL quarterback and Spokane native) and first-year head coach Bill Grier (University of San Diego), a 16-year assistant prior to taking the USD job this past summer.
The Fews will host the seventh annual BasketBall Gala & Golf Classic event August 22-23, 2008. For more information on sponsorship or tickets call (509) 242-8291.
