Morrison Scores 19 In Preseason Debut
Oct. 11, 2006
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - This was exactly what the Charlotte Bobcats envisioned when they selected Adam Morrison with the third overall pick in this year's NBA draft.
Morrison came off the bench to hit seven of his first 10 shots and finished with a game-high 19 points Tuesday night, but the Bobcats fell 109-90 to the Orlando Magic in the preseason opener for both teams. Dwight Howard had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Magic.
"Adam knows how to score and he knows how to play the game at the offensive end of the floor," Orlando head coach Brian Hill said. "He's going to be handful as he moves along in his career. He's a very good offensive player."
A college star at Gonzaga, Morrison entered the game with four minutes to go in the first quarter to a loud ovation. He scored 10 points in five minutes, including a fall away three-pointer to beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter.
He finished 7-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 on three-pointers.
"Adam is a scorer and if you give him open shots he's going to do that every game," said teammate Raymond Felton, who added 16 points for the Bobcats. "He's a great kid and I love his game. I'm looking forward to playing with him."
Morrison said he had a few butterflies when he checked in at the scorer's table with about four minutes left in the first quarter.
"I've played in some pretty hostile environments and with some raucous crowds before," he said. "I was nervous, obviously being my first NBA game, but once I knew that first shot was going down, I felt fine after that. I felt pretty comfortable."
Morrison admitted he needs to work on his defense but knows the Bobcats chose him for his ability to score. He also said the speed of the game doesn't seem to be a problem at the professional level, but he's still getting use to the talent.
"I think the biggest thing is everybody is good," Morrison said. "In college, not everybody is good.
"Every guy out there (in the NBA) has the ability to score or to do something good. That's the biggest adjustment for me."
