'Midnight In The Kennel' Tips Off Hoops Season Friday
Oct. 12, 2000
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University basketball fans will get their first glance at the Bulldogs' men's and women's basketball teams when "Midnight in the Kennel" officially launches the start of practice Friday the 13th at the stroke of midnight.
A full evening of activities is planned, including two Gonzaga students getting an opportunity to win $10,000.
Gonzaga's West Coast Conference volleyball match against Loyola Marymount University at 7 p.m. starts the evening, then "Midnight in the Kennel" festivities begin at 10:30 p.m. with members of both basketball teams signing autographs in the first-floor atrium of the Martin Centre.
At 11:10 p.m., Eric "Big Ed" Edelstein will entertain fans with his comedy routine as well as be the master of ceremonies for the evening. Gonzaga's dance team and cheerleaders will also perform.
Two lucky students will have an opportunity to win $10,000. Students can register on the first and second floors when entering the Martin Centre. One contest will have a student attempting a shot from any place on the floor. If the contestant makes that shot, then he or she must remain on that spot, turn around and make a basket at the opposite end to win the $10,000. The other contest is one shot from 75 feet. Make the shot and win $10,000.
At the stroke of midnight the Bulldog men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced, selected players will compete in a coed 3-point shooting contest and the evening concludes with the men's slam dunk contest.
The Bulldog men are coming off a Sweet 16 season that saw Gonzaga go 26-9 in head coach Mark Few's first season. Gonzaga finished second in the WCC during the regular season but won the WCC Tournament for the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament where the Bulldogs defeated the University of Louisville and St. John's University prior to falling to Purdue University in the round of 16.
Fans will get their first introduction to first-year women's head coach Kelly Graves and his staff. Graves joined the Bulldogs from WCC foe Saint Mary's College last spring. Under Graves, the Gaels won the WCC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1999.
