Matt Santangelo To Join Basketball Radio Broadcast Team

Oct. 14, 2010

SPOKANE, Wash. - A full slate of radio programming is on tap again for the upcoming Gonzaga University men's and women's basketball seasons.

It all starts Friday with the Season Preview Special being aired Friday in conjunction with 'Kraziness in the Kennel' which is the official start of men's basketball practice at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The 90-minute show will air on 1510 KGA, the home of Bulldog men's basketball, beginning at 6 p.m.

And there will also be some changes in the broadcasting crew for all Bulldog men's basketball games this season. Veteran play-by-play announcer Tom Hudson returns for his ninth season calling the action. He'll be joined by a new partner on the broadcasts, but someone who is certainly no stranger to Bulldog basketball.

Matt Santangelo, a member of the 1999 NCAA Elite Eight and the 2000 NCAA Sweet Sixteen teams will replace Richard Fox who spent three seasons on the broadcasts. Fox is stepping aside to focus on his career with Shell Energy of North America. Santangelo was a three-time All-West Coast Conference first-team selection, as well as being the WCC Co-Freshman of the Year and a WCC honorable mention pick.

"We're sorry to see Richard leave and wish him the best, but at the same time we're excited to have Matt join the team," said Kris Kassel, general manager of IMG College, Gonzaga University's multi-media rights holder.

Santangelo is also looking forward to his new role with Bulldog basketball.

"It will be great to be involved with the team in this new role," Santangelo said. "I'm grateful for this opportunity. Richard did a great job so I know I am being counted on to fill a big void left by his departure. "

Santangelo is an Associate in Business Development for Summit Capital Group LLC in Spokane.

All Gonzaga basketball games will be carried on 1510 KGA and simulcast on 101.1 FM. ESPN Radio 1410 KTEL in Walla Walla, Wash., has also been added to the network this season.

Game day will again include six hours of coverage, beginning with the one hour Gonzaga Gameday Broadcast show hosted by Toby Howell that begins two hours prior to tipoff. The Gonzaga Radio Network begins its coverage one hour prior to tipoff and continues through a 45-minute post-game show. Game day coverage concludes with Howell taking calls and reaction following the network post-game. KTEL and 101.1 FM will carry 20 minutes of the network pre-game and post-game shows in addition to the game broadcast.

The Mark Few Radio Show begins its second year Nov. 1 and will air weekly at noon on 1510 KGA and 1410 KTEL. The show will be hosted by Hudson.

The GU Coaches Show will air Tuesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Nov. 2 live from Tomato Street in Spokane and will air on 101.1 FM and be simulcast on 1510 KGA whenever there isn't a live sports programming conflict. Listeners will have their chance to ask questions of Gonzaga's men's and women's basketball coaches and can also see the show live. Hudson will also emcee the show.

Gonzaga's women's basketball games will be on the radio both home and away for the second straight season with Steve Myklebust, the veteran voice of Gonzaga women's basketball, once again courtside to call the action for a seventh straight season. All Gonzaga women's games will air on 1050 AM The Key. There will be a 30-minute pre-game and post-game show accompanying each broadcast.

"Fans will once again be able to follow the Zags on the radio home and away throughout the basketball season through one of the most comprehensive package for men's & women's basketball radio programming in the country," Kassel said.

Kassel said all programming is also available for both live and archived playback through the All-Access player on this website.
