Kraziness in the Kennel This Saturday
SPOKANE, Wash.— Gonzaga University men’s basketball fans will get their first look at the 2014-15 Bulldogs at ‘Kraziness in The Kennel’ this Saturday, Oct. 25th at 4 p.m. at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the event is free to the public.
The festivities officially being at Noon with the Pre-Kraziness Carnival on the McCarthey Athletic Center South Lawn. Pre-Kraziness will feature inflatables and other activities for fans. On social media, fans will be able to interact with senior guard Kevin Pangos during a Q&A on Twitter. Fans can submit questions by sending a tweet to @GonzagaBulldogs beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Kraziness will start with player and coaching staff introductions, followed by a Dunk Contest and 3-point competition. Fans will also have a chance to win tickets to the Battle in Seattle and the game at Spokane Arena against Washington State. The Blue-White scrimmage will conclude the action on the court, and the players will be available for autographs in the concourse after. No outside items will be allowed during the autograph session. Posters, schedule cards and schedule magnets will be provided by Gonzaga marketing staff.
Fans will get their first look at one of the most highly-touted groups of newcomers in program history. Transfers Kyle Wiltjer (Kentucky), Byron Wesley (USC) and Eric McClellan (Vanderbilt) will suit up for the first time, as well as true freshman Josh Perkins, Domantas Sabonis, Silas Melson and Bryan Alberts.
Wiltjer, who sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, came to GU from Kentucky, where he was a key piece on the 2012 national champion squad and the 2013 SEC Sixth Man of the Year. Wesley was the leading scorer at USC last season averaging 17.8 points per game, and is immediately eligible after finishing his undergraduate degree before transferring. McCllelan transferred to Gonzaga midseason from Vanderbilt and will fulfill NCAA transfer rules and be eligible on Jan. 6. He averaged 14.3 points per game in 14 games played for the Commodores in 2013-14.
Perkins comes in as the No. 56-ranked recruit in the nation last year according to ESPN.com, while Sabonis, son of NBA Hall of Famer Arvydas Sabonis, brings a size and international experience. Both Melson and Alberts come in as former state champions and leading scorers for their high school teams in Oregon and California.
The Zags are coming off a 29-7 season in 2013-14, winning the WCC regular season title and the conference tournament. They reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament, their 16th consecutive NCAA appearance, last season as well. They return starters Kevin Pangos (14.4 ppg), Gary Bell Jr. (11.0 ppg) and Przemek Karnowski (10.4 ppg).
Gonzaga then opens the season with an exhibition against Thompson Rivers University on Nov. 1 at McCarthey. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised on KHQ. The first regular season game kicks off four consecutive home games and is on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. against Sacramento State on ROOT SPORTS/KHQ.
