Dickau Ready For NBA Debut

Oct. 29, 2002

Former Gonzaga University standout Dan Dickau makes his NBA regular-season debut Wednesday when the Atlanta Hawks travel to the New Jersey Nets to open the 2003 campaign.

There will also be special meaning for Dickau when the Hawks make their regular-season home debut Thursday against fellow Gonzaga alum John Stockton and the Utah Jazz.

Dickau, drafted by the Sacramento Kings as the final pick in the first round of the June draft and then traded to Atlanta, played in all seven pre-season contests for the Hawks, averaging 19.3 minutes/game in a reserve role. He went 14-for-37 for 37.8 percent from the field, 6-of-20 for 30.0 percent from 3-point range and 7-for-12 from the free throw line for 58.3 percent. He also dished out 23 assists for 3.3 per game.

Thursday's meeting will pit arguably the two greatest point guards in Gonzaga history against each other. While Dickau is a rookie, Stockton is beginning his 19th season in the league. Stockton started all eight pre-season games for the Jazz, averaging 21.9 minutes/game, 11.3 ppg and 5.5 assists/game. Stockton is the NBA's career leader in assists (15,177) and steals (3,128) entering the season.

The two Bulldogs will also get a quick re-match when the Hawks visit Utah on Nov. 8.
