Bulldogs Open Exhibition Slate
Nov. 4, 2004
FIRST OF TWO: Gonzaga University's men's basketball team will play its first of two exhibition contests Friday when Emporia State University visits the sold out McCarthey Athletic Center for a 7 p.m. tipoff. Gonzaga will play a Blue-White Game one week from Sunday at 2 p.m.
ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: Gonzaga University was the first team listed among those receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 released last week. The Bulldogs received 58 points. Stanford University was ranked 25th with 64 points. The University of Kansas sits atop the poll. The Associated Press preseason Top 25 is due out next week.
THE FOE: Emporia State University will be making its second trip to Spokane in as many years. Last season the Bulldogs downed the Hornets 108-71 as then-freshman Adam Morrison scored 29 points to lead five players in double figures. EMU is 15th all-time in wins among NCAA Division II schools with 1,174 victories in its 102-year history. The Hornets have advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight five of the last six seasons. In addition to Gonzaga, the Hornets will be at top-ranked University of Kansas on Sunday and at Wichita State University next Wednesday in exhibition contests.
BULLDOGS HEALTHY: After some early-week bouts with the flu, Gonzaga University should be at full strength for Friday's exhibition tilt. Senior Ronny Turiaf sat out of practice Sunday and Monday and junior Erroll Knight was sidelined Monday. Both have returned to practice.
LINEUP TBD: The starting lineup for Friday is still TBD, according to Gonzaga University head coach Mark Few. "We're still evaluating our team," Few said. "It's not really important who starts an exhibition game - or any game for that matter. It's important we get the right players on the court in the right situations and execute at both ends of the floor. With so many young players we'll be trying a lot of different combinations. This team is still finding itself." Gonzaga's roster features just 92 NCAA Division I starts, and only 61 of those in a Gonzaga uniform.
REGULAR-SEASON OPENER: Gonzaga University opens the regular season Nov. 19 against Portland State University, the inaugural regular-season game in the new 6,000-seat McCarthey Athletic Center. That begins a stretch of three home games in six days with the University of Montana on Nov. 21 and the University of Idaho on Nov. 24. Gonzaga's first road game will be against fifth-ranked University of Illinois on Nov. 27 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., in The Wooden Tradition.
TOUGH SCHEDULE: Three teams ranked in the ESPN/USA Today Top 10 and another in the top 25 dot the Gonzaga University schedule. Georgia Tech (fourth) the University of Illinois (fifth) and Oklahoma State University (eighth) each received one first-place vote. OSU and Georgia Tech were Final Four teams a year ago, GT falling to the University of Connecticut in the title game. The University of Washington (24th) is slated to visit the McCarthey Athletic Center on Dec. 1.
