Bulldogs Host Bryant Bulldogs To Open Season Saturday
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team tips off the 2014 season Saturday against a first-time opponent in the Bulldogs long tradition.
Bryan University of Smithfield, Rhode Island, visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for a 4 p.m. contest, the first of four straight home games for the Bulldogs to open the season. Colorado State University is in town Monday at 6 p.m.
The Zags, 32-3 a year ago and ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25, open this season ranked 15th in the AP rankings of sportswriters and 14th in the USA Today poll of coaches.
Mark Few enters his 15th season as head coach of the Bulldogs and is in his 25th year overall with the program. He is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I and the fourth winningest coach overall by percentage.
Now in his sixth season at the helm of the Bryant program and entering his 13th year as a head coach this season, Tim O’Shea has ushered in a new era for Bryant basketball, not only leading the Bulldogs through the arduous NCAA reclassification process, but then producing a one-year transformation that will go down in the history books. Following a 2-28 season in 2011-12, Bryant was picked 10th in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll last season, but O’Shea and his Bulldogs rolled to a second-place league finish and optimism is high for this season.
