Bulldogs Remain 14th In USA Today/ESPN Poll

Nov. 12, 2007

McLEAN, Virginia (Ticker) -- Kansas State freshman sensation Michael Beasley apparently has gained the attention of basketball coaches around the country.

After posting a pair of wins this past week, Kansas State entered the latest USA Today/ESPN college basketball coaches poll, which was released Monday.

There was very little change throughout the poll, as North Carolina (0-0) remained atop the rankings with 14 first-place votes and 747 points from a panel of Division I coaches. The Tar Heels begin their season Wednesday against Davidson.

Gonzaga remained 14th after defeating Montana 77-54 in their season opener Sunday. The Bulldogs host Idaho at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

One of two schools new to the poll was 24th-ranked Kansas State (2-0), which boasts a young roster that includes two sophomores and five freshmen. The most talented of the bunch is the 6-9 Beasley, one of the top first-year players in the country.

Beasley was brilliant in his collegiate debut Friday, scoring 32 points and grabbing a Big 12 Conference-record 24 rebounds in the Wildcats' 94-63 victory over Sacramento State.

Beasley posted another dominant double-double two days later, collecting 30 points and 14 rebounds in Sunday's 76-66 triumph over Pittsburgh State.

Kansas State was joined in the poll this week by newly ranked No. 25 Syracuse (0-0), which opens its season Monday against Siena.

The top seven schools in the rankings remained the same as last week. UCLA (1-0) was second in the rankings, receiving 10 first-place votes and 744 points. Third-ranked Memphis (2-0) received six first-place votes while No. 4 Kansas (2-0) was given the final first-place vote.

Georgetown (1-0) remained fifth, followed by Big East Conference rival Louisville (0-0) and Tennessee (1-0).

Indiana (0-0) climbed one spot to eighth while Washington State (1-0) and Duke (1-0) completed the top 10. Marquette (1-0) is 11th, followed by Michigan State (0-0), Oregon (2-0), Gonzaga (1-0) and Texas A&M (1-0).

Texas (0-0) and Arizona (0-0) remained 16th and 17th, respectively, while Arkansas (1-0), Pittsburgh (3-0) and Stanford (3-0) rounded out the top 20.

Southern Illinois (0-0) moved up two spots to No. 21, while North Carolina State (0-0) and Villanova (1-0) are ranked 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Kansas State and Syracuse completed the poll, while Southern California and Kentucky fell from the rankings.
