Morrison, Raivio Join Bulldogs
Nov. 13, 2002
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's basketball coach Mark Few added a pair of players to his roster for 2003-04 Wednesday when Adam Morrison, a 6-8, 205-pouind forward from Spokane's Mead High, and Derek Raivio, a 6-1, 155-pound point guard from Mountain View High in Vancouver, Wash., signed letters-of-intent.
Wednesday was the first day of the early signing period.
Morrison averaged 24.4 ppg as a junior last season to lead the Greater Spokane League for the 20-8 Panthers last season. Mead advanced to the Washington State Class 4A Tournament, but lost their first two games. Morrison was an All-GSL first-team selection last season.
"Adam is a great scorer from all areas of the floor," Few said. "He will continue to improve because of his love of the game and has a great future at Gonzaga." Raivio was the Greater St. Helen's League 4A Player of the Year and first-team selection as a junior last season, averaging 22.6 ppg and 6.0 assists/game.
Mountain View, 15-2 last season, won its Class 4A Southwest Washington District Tournament game over Kelso before being eliminated from the State 4A field with back-to-back losses to Prairie and Evergreen.
He was a GSHL honorable mention pick as a sophomore.
"Derek has a great change of pace and a good understanding of the game. He's a good shooter, has quickness and a real love of the game. If I were to compare him to anybody at this point it would be Dan Dickau," Few said.
Few said both players have the qualities the Bulldogs look for both on and off the court.
"These guys are Zags," Few said. "Our players like them, and Adam and Derek will be excellent fits for the chemistry of our program. I'm excited to have both of them join our team. In Adam's case, it's always good to get a great local player to stay home like Sean Mallon decided to do a year ago."
Mallon, a freshman from Spokane's Ferris High, is redshirting this season with the Bulldogs.
