Nov. 13, 2006

NEW YORK (Ticker) - Florida's reign atop the rankings continued.

Three days after a convincing season-opening win, the Gators again were the near-unanimous top selection in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll, released Monday.

Florida (1-0), which rolled to the first national title in school history last season, received 65 of 72 first-place votes and 1,790 points.

Gonzaga received votes for the second straight week, the Bulldogs garnering 125 points and second in the others receiving votes category.

The Bulldogs opened the season with a 90-75 home victory over Eastern Washington University last Friday, and host Rice on Tuesday at the Spokane Arena in the opening round of the West pod of the NIT Season Tip Off.

With outstanding forwards Corey Brewer and Al Horford leading the way, the Gators began their title defense with a 79-54 victory over Samford on Friday.

Brewer scored 19 points while Horford chipped in 11 points, 15 rebounds, six assists and four blocks for Florida, which hosts intrastate rivals North Florida and Jacksonville this week.

The top four spots in the poll remained unchanged, with North Carolina (0-0) receiving the other seven first-place votes and staying second with 1,704 points.

Kansas (1-0) remained third after an impressive 91-57 season-opening triumph over Northern Arizona on Saturday.

The first of five Big East Conference teams in the poll, Pittsburgh (1-0) held at fourth with 1,421 points. The Panthers began their campaign with an 86-67 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday.

After reeling off three wins in three days over this past weekend, Ohio State (3-0) climbed two spots to fifth with 1,418 points.

Defending national runner-up UCLA (0-0) remained sixth, while Louisiana State (0-0), Georgetown (1-0), Wisconsin (1-0) and Alabama (1-0) rounded out the top 10.

Duke (1-0) climbed one spot to 11th, followed by Texas A&M (1-0), Memphis (0-0), Boston College (1-0) and Arizona (0-1), which fell five spots after dropping a 93-90 decision to Virginia in its season opener Sunday.

Marquette (1-0) is ranked 16th, ahead of Washington (1-0), Syracuse (3-0), Texas (2-0) and Creighton (0-0).

Connecticut (1-0), Kentucky (0-0), Georgia Tech (1-0), Nevada (1-0) and Tennessee (1-0) complete the season's second poll.
