Zags, Cougs Tip Off ESPN 24-Hour Hoops Marathon Monday
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga hosts Washington State University Monday at 9 p.m. to tip off the 4th annual ESPN 24-Hour Tip-Off Marathon.
The Bulldogs were also a part of last year's 24-Hour Marathon, hosting San Diego State University in an opening-round game of the 2010 O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic. The Aztecs defeated the Bulldogs 79-76.
After an 11-year hiatus in the series following Gonzaga's 64-63 win Nov. 25, 1988, in the Inland Northwest Classic, the series was renewed Nov. 24, 1995, when the Cougars took a 72-67 overtime victory in the first basketball game played in the new Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. The Zags Kyle Dixon sank three free throws with no time showing on the clock to send the game to overtime. The teams have met every year since with the exception of the 2001 season.
Although Washington State University leads the overall series with Gonzaga 98-48, the Bulldogs have won nine of the last 12 games. Gonzaga snapped a 4-game losing streak in the series by taking seven straight wins until the Cougars won two straight during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Prior to last year's setback the Bulldogs had won the previous two meetings.
The Gonzaga-Washington State University series returned to the two campuses for good Dec. 15, 2001, when Gonzaga took a 67-44 victory in the old Kennel in the Martin Centre next door to the McCarthey Athletic Center.
Gonzaga and Washington State University have met once in post-season play, the Cougars taking a 92-73 victory March 14, 1996, in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament played at Friel Court in Pullman.
