Zags Face Hawai'i In BC Classic Across The Border In Vancouver
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga heads north of the border this weekend to face the University of Hawai'i in the B.C. Classic at Rogers Arena Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Gametime is 6 p.m. PDT. The game will be aired on KHQ-TV in Spokane and Root Sports (check local listings), and the game will also be broadcast on the Gonzaga Radio Network and oin Sirius Radio Channel 138.
The game is a Canadian homecoming for three Zags - Robert Sacre of North Vancouver, British Columbia; Kelly Olynyk from Kamloops, British Columbia, and Kevin Pangos from Newmarket, Ontario. Olynyk will not play in his homeland as he is redshirting. Sacre, a graduate of Handsworth Secondary School located 10 miles from Rogers Arena, was born in Baton Rouge, La., but has dual citizenship. Olynyk attended South Kamloops High and Pangos is an alumnus of Denison Secondary School.
The only other time Gonzaga has played a basketball game outside the United States was Nov. 25-26, 1966, when the Bulldogs participated in the Totem Tournament hosted by the University of British Columbia. The Bulldogs downed St. Martin's University (then College) of Lacey, Wash., 78-60 and host University of British Columbia 89-73 in the 1966-67 season openers.
A staple of downtown Vancouver, Rogers Arena is one of the premier sports and entertainment facilities in all of North America. Rogers Arena is a 475,000 square foot building that has hosted numerous national and international events, including the XXI Winter Olympic Games. The facility seats 17,391 spectators for basketball. The last basketball game at Rogers Arena took place last year when the Toronto Raptors defeated the Phoenix Suns in an NBA preseason game Oct. 6.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting between Gonzaga and the University of Hawai'i in a series the Bulldogs lead 2-1, but it will be the first time the Bulldogs will have played the Rainbow Warriors anyplace other than the Stan Sheriff Center on the UH campus. The first two meetings were Jan. 20-21, 1978, when Gonzaga swept a road trip 70-62 and 87-83. The last meeting was March 16, 1998, in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), the Rainbow Warriors claiming a 78-70 home victory.
