Gonzaga Drops Two Spots In Coaches Poll

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - A pair of convincing wins helped Texas leapfrog Connecticut.

Posting a winning margin of 38.5 points in two wins in the Guardians Classic, the Longhorns moved up one spot to second in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released on Monday.

Opening the season with an 89-56 victory over Southern on Tuesday and a 77-33 thrashing of Samford the following day to set up a matchup with No. 13 West Virginia later Monday, Texas (2-0) kept its two first-place votes and gained 47 points to move 13 ahead of Connecticut's 717.

Fresh off three straight routs, Duke (3-0) maintained its top spot from the preseason, with the other 29 first-place votes and 771 points.

The Huskies (1-0), who opened their season with a 75-56 win at Pepperdine on Friday, is the first of two Big East teams in the top five, followed by Villanova (1-0).

Oklahoma (1-0) moved up one spot to fifth, followed by Louisville (1-0), Kentucky (2-0) and Arizona (0-0).

Surviving a close 69-60 victory over Idaho on Saturday, Gonzaga (1-0) dropped two spots to ninth. Boston College (2-0) rounded out the first 10.

The lone powerhouse left in Conference USA following the loss of five teams to the Big East, Memphis (2-0) jumped up a spot to No. 11, followed by Michigan State (0-1). The Spartans fell seven spots after a surprising 84-62 loss at Hawaii on Saturday.

The Mountaineers (2-0) climbed up two spots to 13th, ahead of Illinois (2-0) and Florida (4-0). The Gators were the biggest mover of the week, ascending from out of the poll to No. 15 after winning the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic with a victory over Syracuse on Friday.

UCLA (3-0) is No. 16, followed by Iowa (2-0), Alabama (2-1), Syracuse (3-1) and Maryland (1-0).

Indiana (1-0) is ranked 21st, ahead of George Washington (0-0), Iowa State (1-0) and Wake Forest (3-1).

Stanford (0-1), which was upset, 79-63, by UC-Irvine on Saturday, dropped 12 spots to round out the poll.

Despite gaining a season-opening 82-74 victory over Sacramento State, Nevada (1-0) dropped out.
