Gonzaga Looks To Bounce Back Against Chaminade Tuesday
LAHAINA, Maui (AP) - After dominating teams on its own court, Gonzaga suffered its first loss in its first game away from home.
The 11th-ranked Bulldogs, though, would appear to have a good chance to bounce back Tuesday.
Gonzaga tries to regroup against Division II Chaminade in the Maui Invitational consolation bracket.
While the Bulldogs (4-1) outscored opponents by an average of 21.8 points in winning each of their first four games in Spokane, they were handed a surprising 84-79 loss to Dayton in the opening round of the tournament Monday. Star guard Kevin Pangos had 27 points and Sam Dower added 18, but both players - along with starting center Przemek Karnowski - fouled out.
Pangos picked up his last foul in the final minute and was unable to contribute to the last two possessions.
Gonzaga now turns its attention to Chaminade (2-1), which fell 93-77 to No. 18 Baylor on Monday. The Silverswords dropped to 7-76 all-time in the event despite Christophe Varidel's 42 points, one shy of the tournament record set by Gonzaga's Adam Morrison in 2005.
"The first half, I kept thinking about the words 'Maui Magic' because Christophe was definitely on fire," Bears coach Scott Drew said.
Varidel, who transferred to Chaminade after three years at Florida Gulf Coast, shot 14 of 29, including 10 of 16 from long distance to tie a tournament record. He returned to the lineup after missing an 82-63 win over Saint Martin's on Nov. 9 due to injury.
"I wanted him to have a shot. I just looked at him and asked him if he wanted to go back in and he said yeah," said coach Eric Bovaird, whose team was outrebounded 47-32. "He could have said his knees were aching."
Besides Varidel, nobody scored more than eight points Monday. The rest of the team went a combined 12 of 40 (30.0 percent) from the floor.
Varidel also came up big with 30 points in an 82-73 win over Western Oregon on Nov. 8.
