Men's Basketball Signs Junior College Recruit

Nov. 27, 2001

SPOKANE, Wash. - Tony Skinner, a 6-5, 195-pound guard/forward from Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Gonzaga University next fall, men's basketball coach Mark Few announced.

Skinner is currently averaging 12.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg and is shooting 35.7 percent from 3-point range in helping the Plainsmen get off to a 5-2 start this season. He grabbed a season-high 8 rebounds against McCook, Neb., JC.

Last season Skinner averaged 10.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg and shot 40 percent from 3-point range for Coach Lowell Roumph.

"Tony is going to be a great addition. He can score, is a prolific 3-point shooter and is a good athlete. He's every bit as athletic as Anthony Reason," Few said. "He's somebody we're looking at to step right in and contribute next year. We lose two guys on the wing (Reason and Alex Hernandez), and he should step in and help us immediately. I think he was kind of a steal. Nobody really knew about him and we were able to get it done early. He's also a great student, an engineering major who will fit in great at Gonzaga academically."

A native of Albuquerque, NM, Skinner graduated from Cibola High where he was an All-City selection, an All-District nominee and was voted MVP of the East-West All-Star Game in Albuquerque. He averaged 13 ppg, 5 rpg and 2 blocks/game as a senior. He also earned All-Academic honors.
