Zags Drop In USA Today/ESPN Poll

McLEAN, Virginia (Ticker) - It was pretty much status quo in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll this week among the top 10.

Wake Forest (5-0), which overtook Kansas to take over the top spot in the poll for the first time ever last week, won the Preseason NIT with victories over Yale, Providence and Arizona, and picked up 22 of the 31 possible first place votes and 732 points overall.

Kansas (2-0) remained second with five first place votes and 732 points.

Washington was the big mover of the week, riding a tournament championship and moving up seven spots to No. 16 while Cincinnati and Virginia moved into the Top 25 replacing Memphis and Gonzaga.

Gonzaga, who will host the No. 16 Huskies on Wednesday in the McCArthey Athletic Center, received 15 points and dropped from 25th following last Saturday's loss to Illinois.

The Fighting Illini, 4-0 following a 31-point win over Oakland and an 89-72 win over Gonzaga in the Wooden Tradition on Saturday, moved up a spot to No. 3, replacing Georgia Tech (3-0), which dropped to fourth. Syracuse (5-0), Connecticut (1-0), Oklahoma State (3-0) Kentucky (3-0), Michigan State (3-0) and Duke (3-0) all retained its slots in the top 10 for the second straight week.

After easily winning the Maui Invitational, North Carolina (4-1) moved up just one spot to No. 11 and is followed by Maryland (3-0) North Carolina State (4-0), Pittsburgh (3-0) and Texas (3-1).

The Huskies (4-0), with wins over Utah, Oklahoma and Alabama in the Great Alaska Shootout, are No. 16. Louisville (3-1), which lost to Iowa in the first round of the Maui Invitational, dropped from 11th to 17th and is followed by Florida (3-0), Notre Dame (3-0) and Arizona (3-2).

Mississippi State (5-1), Alabama (4-1), Wisconsin (2-1), Cincinnati (3-0) and Virginia (4-0) round out the top 25. The Bearcats were impressive in a victory over Purdue and the Cavaliers knocked off Arizona.
