SPOKANE, Wash. – Despite coming back for three straight wins following its first setback of the season, Gonzaga University dropped in both the Associated Press and USA Today men’s basketball rankings this week.
The Bulldogs, who dropped their opening-round game of the 30th annual EA Sports Maui Invitational to the University of Dayton, fell five spots to a tie for 15th in the USA Today voting by coaches and eight spots to 19th in the AP ranking of sportswriters. Gonzaga came back to post two wins in the Maui Invitational and downed Coppin State University Sunday at home to move to 7-1.
The Zags are tied with the University of Memphis in the USA Today poll; those teams squaring off Feb. 8 in Memphis, Tenn., as part of ESPN’s College Game Day.
Michigan State University held the top spot in both polls, receiving 63 of 65 first-place votes in AP and 31 of 32 votes in the USA Today poll. The University of Arizona received the remaining votes in both polls.
Gonzaga will be idle until Saturday when New Mexico State University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for an 8 p.m. PST game to be televised on ESPNU and broadcast on the IMG Gonzaga Radio Network including flagship station 1510 KGA CBS Sports Radio in Spokane.
