Bulldogs 11th In USA Today/ESPN Poll

Dec. 5, 2005

BRISTOL, Connecticut (Ticker) - Thanks to the last-second heroics of Sean Dockery, Duke remained the top team in the latest USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll released Monday.

Dockery launched a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from near mid-court to preserve Duke's undefeated season with a 77-75 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech on Sunday.

The Blue Devils (7-0) have been the poll's only No. 1 team this season, taking over for defending national champion North Carolina. The Tar Heels (4-1) entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 24 following a victory over then-No. 10 Kentucky on Saturday.

Duke received 25 first-place votes and 767 points to hold a 28-point lead over Texas (7-0), which received four first-place votes. The Longhorns are No. 2 in both the men's basketball and football polls.

Connecticut (6-0) and Villanova (4-0) each received a first-place vote and are third and fourth with 718 and 689 points, respectively. The Wildcats maintained their ranking following Saturday's win over Oklahoma (4-1), which tumbled four spots to No. 9.

Louisville (3-0) climbed a spot to fifth and is followed by Boston College (6-0), Memphis (6-1) and Florida (7-0).

Illinois (7-0), which lost in the NCAA Tournament title game to UNC, is at No. 10. The Illini are 47-2 over the last two seasons.

Gonzaga (4-2) fell victim to the nation's longest home winning streak and fell four spots to No. 11. Washington (7-0), which defeated Gonzaga on Sunday to extend its home winning streak to 29 games, climbed seven spots to No. 12.

Iowa (7-1) is at No. 13 and followed by Michigan State (5-2), Kentucky (5-2), Indiana (4-1), Maryland (5-1), UCLA (6-1), Alabama (4-1), George Washington (4-0) and Wake Forest (7-1).

Nevada (5-0) entered the poll at No. 22 and is followed by North Carolina State.

Tumbling 12 spots following a loss to Houston on Saturday, Arizona (2-3) completes the poll while 2003 national champion Syracuse and Louisiana State dropped out.
