Gonzaga-South Alabama In Saturday's Battle In Seattle
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Battle in Seattle returns to KeyArena for its 11th season Saturday when Gonzaga University faces the University of South Alabama.
Gametime is 7 p.m. and will be televised on KHQ-TV/ROOT SPORTS and can be heard on the IMG Gonzaga Radio Network including flagship station 1510 KGA CBS Radio Sports in Spokane.
Begun in 2003 when Seattle favorite son Quin Snyder brought his then third-ranked Missouri Tigers to town, the 17th-ranked Bulldogs pulling off the 87-80 overtime victory.
Gonzaga’s record in the Battle in Seattle is 6-4.
Gonzaga and South Alabama first met Dec. 29, 1995, in the semifinals of the U.S. West Tournament hosted by the University of Washington and played at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on the Huskies campus. Gonzaga prevailed 60-43. Former NBA coach Bill Musselman was in his first year as head coach of the Jaguars that season. The teams last met Dec. 5, 1998, at the Hawkeye Classic on the University of Iowa campus, Gonzaga claiming an 80-63 consolation-game victory.
Gonzaga is 6-1 all-time against the current make-up of the Sun Belt Conference. The Bulldogs are 1-0 against both Arkansas-Little Rock and Georgia State, and 2-0 against both Western Kentucky and South Alabama. Fans remember the 2009 NCAA Tournament Second Round game in Portland, Ore., when Demetri Goodson went coast-to-coast in the closing seconds for a basket an 83-81 Zag victory.
South Alabama is 8-6 against current members of the West Coast Conference but is 0-2 all-time against Gonzaga. The Jags last played a WCC school in 2007-08, a 77-55 win over San Diego.
