Battle Of Bulldogs Matches Gonzaga Against Butler
SPOKANE, Wash. - It will be a battle of Bulldogs Tuesday when Gonzaga hosts Butler University in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
These are two programs who are trying to shake the "mid-major" tag as NCAA Division I contenders who are not part of a BCS conference, Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference and the visiting Bulldogs in the Horizon League.
Tuesday's game will be the second hardwood meeting between the schools, the first Nov. 24, 2006, in the championship game of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT at Madison Square Garden. The Bulldogs from Indianapolis beat the Bulldogs from Spokane 79-71 two nights after the 23rd-ranked (ESPN/USA Today) Zags had stunned second-ranked University of North Carolina 82-74 in the semifinals.
Gonzaga's deepest run into the NCAA Tournament was the 1999 Elite Eight where the Bulldogs fell to eventual national champion University of Connecticut 67-62.
Butler has played for the national championship in each of the past two seasons, losing to Duke University 61-59 on a final shot in 2010 and falling 53-41 to the University of Connecticut last season as a cold-shooting Butler squad could not get untracked.
