Zags Head To Midwest To Face Kansas State in Wichita

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team will head to Wichita, Kans., for the Wichita Wildcat Classic to face Kansas State University Saturday.

The game is a return for Kansas State facing Gonzaga in last year’s Battle in Seattle. The game is promoted by Idol Sports, the same company which promotes the Battle in Seattle.

Gonzaga and Kansas State each bring modest winning streaks into Saturday’s contest. The Bulldogs have won six straight on their way to a 10-1 record since an opening-round defeat to Dayton at the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Gonzaga has since defeated Chaminade, Arkansas, Coppin State, New Mexico State, West Virginia and South Alabama. Kansas State started the season 2-3 but has since strung together five straight victories over Long Beach State coached by former Bulldog head coach Dan Monson, Central Arkansas, Ole Miss, South Dakota and Troy.

Gonzaga head coach Mark Few and Kansas State head man Bruce Weber aren’t strangers. Few and the Bulldogs topped Weber and Kansas State 68-52 last season in the Battle in Seattle at KeyArena. Weber coached Illinois past Gonzaga in the 2010 Battle in Seattle 73-61. Few is 1-1 against Kansas State, dropping an 84-61 decision Nov. 22, 2010, in the College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, Mo. Few was an assistant coach on the 1994 NIT squad that lost at KSU. Weber is 3-2 all-time against the Zags, including a 3-1 record in his 9-year tenure with the Fighting Illini.

Saturday won’t be Gonzaga’s first trip to Wichita, although it’s been 13 years since the last venture. The Bulldogs played in the 1994 Cessna Classic hosted by Wichita State. Gonzaga lost to the hosts 54-53 in overtime in the semifinals, then downed Air Force 95-62 to claim third place.
