Bulldogs Move Up On Spot To 13th In Both Major Hoop Polls
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's basketball team took advantage of some movement in the major basketball polls to move up one notch to 13th in the both the Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Top 25 this week.
The University of Florida dropped six spots from eighth to 14th in the AP balloting and the University of Illinois dropped five spots to 15th in the USA Today/ESPN poll to help the Bulldogs advance one spot in the respective polls. Florida lost to Kansas State University, a team Gonzaga defeated in The Battle in Seattle, while Illinois, which has handed Gonzaga (11-1) its lone loss to date, fell to the University of Missouri.
Syracuse University also fell six spots in the AP poll from third to ninth, and dropped four spots to seventh in the coaches poll after losing to Temple University.
The Bulldogs, who downed Campbell University last Wednesday in their final game prior to Christmas break, returns to action Friday when Baylor University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for a 5 p.m. game. It will be Gonzaga's fourth game against a Big 12 Conference school this season, Gonzaga having already defeated West Virginia University, the University of Oklahoma and KSU. Gonzaga's fifth and final game this season against a Big 12 opponent will be New Year's Eve at Oklahoma State University.
Gonzaga trails Illinois by 51 points in the AP poll and fellow Jesuit institution Creighton University by just four points in the USA Today/ESPN poll. The Bulldogs have been ranked all eight weeks this season.
Duke University remained atop both polls for the second straight week after unseating Indiana University after a six-week run at No. 1. The University of Michigan is second in both polls, receiving two first-place votes in the AP poll and one in the USA Today/ESPN balloting to prevent Duke from being a unanimous No. 1.
