Bulldog Men Open WCC Play Saturday At Home With Broncos
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University’s men’s basketball team opens West Coast Conference play Saturday when Santa Clara University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU and broadcast on the IMG Gonzaga Radio Network including flagship station 1510 KGA CBS Sports Radio.
Bulldog head coach Mark Few has never lost a WCC opener in his 14 previous seasons and the Zags have won 17 straight West Coast Conference openers. The last team to down the Bulldogs in a WCC opener was Santa Clara Jan. 12, 1996, by a 72-61 count in what was then known as Toso Pavilion on the SCU campus. Toso was renamed the Leavey Center following a remodel in 2000.
The Bulldogs bring a streak of 18 straight wins in WCC home openers into Saturday’s fray, and again Santa Clara is the team to play the role of the spoiler. The Broncos downed the Bulldogs 73-68 in overtime Jan. 19, 1995, next door in the Martin Centre to hand the Bulldogs their last WCC home-opening setback.
