Bulldogs Back In Action As Baylor Bears Visit Friday

SPOKANE, Wash. - Baylor University visits the McCarthey Athletic Center Friday at 5 p.m. to get Gonzaga University's post-Christmas action started.

The Bulldogs are 3-0 all-time against the Bears. The last meeting came Dec. 18, 2010, at American Airlines Arena in Dallas in The Showcase. The Bulldogs prevailed 68-64 as Kelly Olynyk put Gonzaga ahead to stay with a 3-pointer right after No. 9 Baylor scored four points on one possession as the Bulldogs handed the Bears their first loss of the season in eight outings. Olynyk made his go-ahead basket with 1:46 left, the last of 12 lead changes after halftime, and Gonzaga made 7-of-9 free throws after that. Gonzaga also downed the Bears 77-75 in the Coors Light Classic semifinals hosted by Fresno State University Nov. 29, 1991, and stopped the Bears 78-69 Nov. 15, 2006, in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT pod played at the Spokane Arena. Gonzaga advanced to Madison Square Garden for the NIT and downed second-ranked University of North Carolina in the semifinals and falling to Butler University in the title game.

Gonzaga had a long Christmas break by basketball standards, having Dec. 20-25 off. The Bulldogs scattered literally around the world following the Campbell game Dec. 20. The Bulldogs didn't have to be back until a Christmas night practice. Freshman Przemek Karnowski got the most frequent flyer miles, traveling home to Torun, Poland. He spent approximately 42 hours traveling and a little more than 50 hours on the ground in Poland. Kevin Pangos went to his hometown of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, Elias Harris headed to Houston and Kelly Olynyk drove to Kamloops, British Columbia. Redshirt junior transfer Gerard Coleman headed home to Boston and won't rejoin the team until January.
