Zags To Row For National Championship

CAMDEN, N.J. - Gonzaga University men's crew will row for a national championship on Saturday morning as the Zag Varsity 4+ advanced to the Grand Final of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships for the second-straight season after a second-place finish in their semifinal heat on Friday. The Bulldog Varsity 4- will also row on Saturday in the Petite Final. The Gonzaga Varsity 4+ earned a spot in the Grand Final and a chance at becoming national champions after placing second in its semifinal heat in a time of 6:22.905. This is the second consecutive season the Bulldog Varsity 4+ made the Grand Final and third time in 10 years. Temple University won the Bulldogs semifinal heat race with a time of 6:19.463. UCLA placed third and claimed the final spot in the Grand Final with a finish of 6:24.415. Joining Gonzaga, Temple and UCLA in the Grand Final are the University of California, Hobart College and Brown University who were the top three finishers in the second semifinal. Gonzaga's Varsity 4- also rowed on Friday and moved on to the Petite Final with a third place finish in their repechage race with a time of 6:34.911. The University of Wisconsin won the race in a time of 6:19.485 to earn a spot in the Grand Final. Grand Valley State University placed second in a time of 6:23.129 to also earn a spot in the Petite Final. Also advancing to the Petite Final were Georgetown University, Cornell University, Rutgers University and Yale University.
