CAMDEN, NJ - The Gonzaga University men's crew program capped the 2006 season with a fourth place finish in Saturday's Grand Final of the IRA National Championships. The Bulldogs Varsity 4+ finished fourth in the nation as the Zags lone senior Connor Barry stroked the boat in his final IRA appearance. It was the first Grand Final appearance for a Bulldogs boat since the 1997 season and the second highest finish for Gonzaga in IRA competition.

The Bulldogs boat posted a time of 6:35.63 to edge local rival Washington State by less than a quarter of a second. Stanford won the Grand Final with a convincing time of 6:21.42 with California coming in second. Temple was third, four seconds ahead of the Bulldogs and Cougars crews. Hobart rounded out the field four seconds behind GU and WSU.

Gonzaga's Freshman 8+ finished the year with a fourth place finish in the Third Final to rank 16th in the nation. The Bulldogs eight rowed a time of 6:08.62 to hold off Rutgers by half a second. Navy won the Third Final with a time of 6:01.69 with Saint Joseph's and Syracuse crossing neck and neck for second and third positions. MIT was sixth in the race.

"This was a great finish to our racing season," stated head coach Dan Gehn. "We have worked on some different things this season and didn't always get the results we had hoped for. To have two solid finishes like this at the IRA's will help us to continue and build this program. We only had one senior on this year's team and were able to advance a Freshman 8+ to the IRA's for the first time in school history."
