Bulldogs Win Head of the Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University captured seven of eight races on Saturday morning as the Bulldogs kicked off the fall racing season at the Head of the Spokane Regatta. The race, which was delayed for about an hour due to heavy fog, covered 5,000 meters on the Spokane River. Gonzaga won races in the men's varsity 8+, men's novice 8+, men's varsity 4+, men's junior varsity 8+, women's novice 8+, women's junior varsity 8+, women's varsity 4+, while Washington State's picked up its lone win in the women's varsity 8+. The Bulldog varsity men covered the course in a time of 15:37 to defeat the Cougars by over a minute. The GU novice men finished the course in 17:06; 44 seconds ahead of WSU. The men's varsity 4+ finished in a time of 17:35, while the men's junior varsity 8+ closed out with a time of 16:11, exactly a minute faster than Washington State's junior varsity 8+. The Gonzaga women's novice boat held off WSU by a minute and 14 seconds, while the junior varsity 8+ earned the two-second victory over the Cougars. Rounding out the women's victories was the varsity 4+ who had a time of 19:59. Washington State's women's varsity earned the Cougars its lone victory by defeating the Bulldogs by a mere eight seconds. WSU had a time of 17:25, while GU had a time of 17:33.
