Crew Wins Four Races At Head Of The Snake

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's crew teams picked up four wins over six events at the 2004 Head of the Snake regatta hosted by Washington State University. The men's team won all three events against the Cougars after dropping the varsity eight race to WSU two weeks ago in Spokane. The Washington State women won the varsity and junior varsity eight events while the Gonzaga novice women won a 41-second margin to hand the edge in race victories to Gonzaga. The Bulldogs will wrap up the fall racing season in two weeks when they compete in the Head of the Lake in Seattle. The men's varsity race was dominated by the Gonzaga eight as the Bulldogs won by 17-seconds over WSU to avenge the loss the Cougars handed them two weeks ago in Spokane. Gonzaga rowed a time of 16:52.4 while WSU finished at 17:09.17. In the varsity four event, Gonzaga's top boat easily won the race in a time of 18:27.6 knocking off Washington State's fourth boat by 18-seconds. Gonzaga's second boat was third in the event at 19:14.8 followed by the final three Cougar boats. In the final men's event Gonzaga's top boat rowed a time of 17:47.5 to win by 35-seconds over Washington State. WSU boats placed second, third and fourth with Gonzaga's second novice eight boat crossing the line at 19:36.3. Race conditions consisted of a 10 to 15 mph head win with flat racing water. The women's racing action was favored by the Washington State varsity and junior varsity boats as both defeated their Gonzaga counterparts on the 5,000 meter course. The Cougar varsity women rowed a time of 17:49.9 to defeat Gonzaga by 54-seconds. The junior varsity race was also dominated by WSU with the Cougars rowing a time of 18:13.9 compared to 19:08.1 for GU. Gonzaga was able to salvage the day on the women's side with a second straight win over Washington State in the novice eight race. Gonzaga's top novice boat rowed a time of 20:15.8 while Gonzaga's second boat finished second at 20:55.4, one-second ahead of Washington State's top novice boat.
Gonzaga's men's rowing consisted of coxswain Lauren Gadeken, stroke Connor Barry, Pat Haffey, Ben Foley, Nathan Wilson, Matthew Wernette, Derek Clemmensen, Matthew White and bow David Hinshaw in the varsity eight. Coxswain Mara Oblak, Haffey, Barry, Wilson and Wernette comprised the men's varsity four A boat. Coxswain Elaine Parry, Brad Jonnes, Hinshaw, White and Nick Talbot comprised the men's varsity B boat. Coxswain Meghan Quinn, stroke Joe Dudley, Warren North, Scott McCoy, Brett Bossevain, Ben Rosenblatt, Drew Hastings, Justin Bayley and bow Sean Haase comprised the men's novice eight A boat. Coxswain Virginia Moore, stroke Ryan Davenport, Michael Smoot, Frank Normandin, Jeb Berg, Drew Smith, Trevor Mattson, Justin Quilliam and bow Chris Pay comprised the men's novice eight B boat. Gonzaga's women's rowing consisted of coxswain Erin Palmiter, stroke Nicole Aadland-Lewis, Karen O'Hagan, Jenni Cooper, Jessica Kocarnik, Maria Fussell, Heather Jewell, Brianna Morin, bow Sarah Allison in the women's varsity eight. Coxswain Kris Lund, stroke Kari Durgan, Brittany Price, Mariah Smith-Miloff, Ann Parker, Terea Archuleta, Jessica Uphoff, Liz Sambach and bow Jessica Michaels comprised the women's junior varsity eight. Coxswain Joan Aubry, stroke Whitney Patrick, Julie Smetana, Cory Nelson, Stephanie Murphy, Courtney Haia, Rebecca Jensen, Sara Amatuzio and bow Kelsey Koenig comprised the women's novice eight A boat. Coxswain Jennifer Hunter, stroke Kristen Malone, Michelle McMullen, Jennifer Pierce, Cherami Cadwell, Danielle Loparco, Catherine Kocarnik, Sherri Urann and bow Erin Bastien comprised the women's novice eight B boat. Coxswain Sarah Kwak, stroke Allison Ulman, Ashlin Mears, Kiira Schoessler, Greta Hoffman, Brittany Schneider, Danielle Kirby, Cassie Shoebridge and bow Sara Gerlach comprised the women's novice eight C boat.
