SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing varsity eight will participate in the 20th annual George Washington Invitational Regatta this Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, on the Potomac River race course. The event is part of the 2007 National Cherry Blossom Festival, which takes place from March 31 to April 15. George Washington University will host the event; which is the largest collegiate rowing competition in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

This year's regatta departs from the traditional heats and finals format it has used in the past and instead will have each team compete in three dual or trial races - one on Friday afternoon and two on Saturday. The race will take place on a 2,000-meter, four-lane buoyed course which begins near the Sprout Run area of the Potomac River with the finish line at Washington Harbour in Georgetown.

The regatta will feature men's and women's crews from 15 different universities. Besides the Bulldogs and host Colonials, who are ranked 20th in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll, the other men's squads are No. 14 Cornell University, No. 16 Georgetown University, No. 18 University of Michigan, University of Virginia, Temple University, Saint Joseph's University, Marietta (OH) and Florida Tech. The men's squads will vie for the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy.

The Zags varsity eight, who was idle last weekend, will hit the water for their first race on Friday at 5:03 p.m. ET. Gonzaga will race against Florida Tech and Temple. While Temple is not ranked in the Top-20 Collegiate Poll, the Owls are one of seven teams that are receiving votes. Gonzaga and Virginia are two of the remaining six teams that are also receiving votes.

Gonzaga's second race of the weekend will be on Saturday at 11:54 a.m. ET. The Zags will race against two ranked opponents as they are pitted against both Georgetown and Michigan.

The Bulldogs final race of the weekend begins at 5:08 p.m. ET on Saturday. GU's varsity eight will race host George Washington.

Varsity Eight Lineup: LeAnne Templeman, Warren North, Scott McCoy, Pat Swihart, David Hinshaw, Brendan McCarthy, Matt Wernette, Bryan Franceschi, Andre' Gallant
