Zags Defeat UC Davis At Windermere Classic
April 14, 2007 REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's varsity crew team hit the waters twice on Saturday at the 5th Annual Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic hosted by Stanford University on Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City, Calif. The Bulldogs earned a victory over UC Davis in their first race of the day, before falling to the University of Washington in their second race. Drawing nearly 1,000 athletes, the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic has quickly become one of the premier collegiate rowing events, drawing top crews from throughout the United States. Participating teams include, along with Gonzaga, Stanford University, George Washington, Notre Dame, Central Florida, Princeton, Oregon State, Loyola, Washington, Louisville, Tennessee, Virginia, Trinity College, California, Wisconsin, UCLA, Washington State, Santa Clara, Sonoma State and UC Davis. Athletes are competing in two days of Henley style racing, a one-on-one or a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England. The Zags defeated their longtime rival UC Davis easily in their morning race. Gonzaga closed out the 2,000 meter course in a time of 6:13.55. The Aggies crossed the finish line nearly five seconds later in a time of 6:18.00. Washington's freshman A team came out strong and defeated Gonzaga in its second race of the day in a time of 6:17.10. The Bulldogs finished the course in a time of 6:25.51. Gonzaga will close out the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic tomorrow when it races against No. 19 Oregon State University at 11:24 a.m.
