Zags Named to All-WIRA Team
May 1, 2007 RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Four Gonzaga University men's rowers were named to the All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) team Sunday after the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Three rowers earned first-team honors while another was named to the second-team. The Bulldogs won a title in the Second Varsity 8+ and placed second in both the Varsity 8+ and Novice 4+. Matthew Wernette, David Hinshaw and Warren North all earned first-team All-WIRA honors as they guided the Bulldogs to a second place finish in the Varsity 8+ race. The race was so close WIRA officials had to use video to determine the top three finishers. Wernette, a senior, earned his second All-WIRA honor as he was named All-WIRA second-team in 2005. Derek Clemmensen was named to the All-WIRA second-team after the Zag Second Varsity 8+ captured the championship on Sunday. Gonzaga will compete in this weekend's Opening Day Regatta hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle.
