Zags To Send Two Boats To IRA's
May 27, 2008
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing program received two bids to the IRA National Championships as qualifiers were announced by the competition committee Sunday. Gonzaga will enter a Varsity 8+ and Freshman 8+ in this year's races set for June 5-7 at Cooper River in Camden, N.J. This is the first time in program history the Varsity 8+ has earned a bid in the IRA National Championships, and the second time overall the Freshman 8+ claimed a bid. The Freshman 8+ made its first appearance in the IRA National Championships in 2006, finishing fourth in the Third Final to rank 16th in the nation. "This is a great opportunity for us; this has been the varsity boat's main goal all season," explained head coach Dan Gehn. "Last year we were extremely close to making it, but were edged out. The guys have worked very hard this year and really deserve this. They have raced well when they needed to and finished strong at our regional championships." The Bulldogs Varsity 8+ consists of Sean Finerty, Warren North, Joe Dudley, Pat Swihart, Scott McCoy, Brendan McCarthy, Greg Malman, Patrick Moran, and Michael Anderson. This will be North's fourth time participating in the IRA National Championships. He was part of the Freshman 4+ that placed seventh in 2005. He then was a member of the Varsity 4+ boats that placed fourth in both 2006 and 2007. Swihart, McCoy, McCarthy and Malman also have experience rowing at the IRA's.
The Zags Freshman 8+ is comprised of Crystal Huff, Matt White, Julian Stephanski, Andrew Krug, Carson Bowlin, Connor Wege, Neil Coppinger, Nick Willard, and Benjamin Schwarz. "The freshman men have been working all year towards this invitation to the IRA Regatta and the Men's National Championships," stated freshman coach Shawn Bagnall. "It's exciting, a great compliment to the season they have had thus far, and we are looking forward to the challenge of measuring-up against the best rowing programs in the nation." Last year Gonzaga also entered two boats into the IRA National Championship, with the Varsity 4+ finishing fourth overall and the Varsity 4- taking ninth place. |
