SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing program received two bids to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships as qualifiers were announced by the competition committee late last week. Gonzaga will enter boats in both the Varsity 4+ and Varsity 4- at this year's races set for May 31-June 2 at Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ consists of LeeAnne Templeman, Warren North, David Hinshaw, Brendan McCarthy and Matt Wernette. Hinshaw, McCarthy and North were all part of the Varsity 4+ squad that finished fourth in the Grand Final of the IRA Championships a season ago. It was the first Grand Final appearance for a Bulldogs boat since the 1997 season and the second highest finish for Gonzaga in IRA competition.

The Bulldog Varsity 4- includes Pat Swihart, Greg Malman, Brian Franceschi and Scott McCoy.

Last year the Bulldogs also entered two boats in the IRA Championships. Besides the Varsity 4+, Gonzaga's Novice 8+ participated for the first time in program history, earning a 16th place finish.

Seeding for the championships will be released later this week.
