Men's Golf: Zags in ninth, led by Nolan's round of 70
March 11, 2018
BANDON, Ore. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team is in ninth place following the first round of the Bandon Dunes Championship. Holden Backes, playing as an individual, is in fifth place after an opening round 67 (-4). The Zags are hosting the ninth annual event on the Pacific Dunes Course at the Bandon Dunes Resort.
Nick Nolan led GU on the first day and sits in a tie for 14th at one-under (70). He made 13 pars and had three birdies to just two bogeys.
Backes had the best day of an individual in the 84-golfer field. He finished with 12 pars, five birdies and one bogey in Round 1. The freshman matched the lowest average (2.40, -3) in the field on the course's Par-3 holes.
"Playing as an individual, Holden played a near bogey free round of four-under par, which included five birdies and just one bogey," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "A very impressive round on a course he's only seen a couple of times and in only his second collegiate event."
Tyler Munetake and Ben DuBois are tied for 33rd on the leaderboard at one-over (72). Munetake closed his day strong going one-under on the back-nine, while DuBois was even-par after the front-nine. Munetake and Nolan both had the third-most pars on the first day with 13 each. DuBois matched the lowest average (4.00, -4) in the field on the course's Par-5 holes.
"We posted three solid scores from our top-five, but weren't able to get the fourth," Gray said. "However, with two rounds to go, we kept ourselves in range of a good finish this week. David scored uncharacteristically today and I don't anticipate that continuing if the weather remains the same. Nick posted a solid round of one-under, followed by scores of one-over for Tyler and Ben."
Arizona State is in first place, totaling a 273 (-11) on the opening day. The No. 22 Sun Devils have a five-stroke lead over second place, No. 15 Clemson. Chun An Yu paced Arizona State in Round 1, carding a 65 (-6). He is tied atop the leaderboard with Utah's Kyler Dunkle.
The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. Magruder will be the first Zag to tee off at 9:20 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
