Zags Finish 10th at Maui Jim Intercollegiate
Sept. 24, 2017
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Gonzaga men’s golfer David Ganz tied for 22nd at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at four-over (220) par. The Zags placed 10th as a team at the Desert Forest Golf Club.
At the season-opening event for GU, Ganz finished with 12 birdies, making five in the final round. He carded a 71 (-1) in Round 3. He had 10 pars Sunday.
Ben DuBois, Tyler Munetake and Nick Nolan all tied for 43rd at 11-over (227). Munetake and Nolan were also one-under (71) on the final day, while DuBois was four-over (76). Munetake eagled the Par-5, 16th hole, and had six birdies in the third round. Nolan made 15 of his 37 pars in the final round. DuBois finished with 12 pars.
Chris Mogg came in 70th. The sophomore was 23-over (239) in the three-day, 54-hole event. He made 10 pars and a birdie, finishing Round 3 with an 80 (+8).
The Bulldogs were one-over (289) as a team in the third round, the fifth-lowest team score in the 13-team field. Gonzaga was 34-over (898) in the tournament.
“Great effort by the team all week, culminating in a great round today,” Zags’ Head Coach Robert Gray said. “Once again solid play by David to round out the week and great finishing rounds by Nick and Tyler to give us three rounds under par on an extremely difficult course.
“Ben and Chris both fought hard all day. Ben had a couple of tee shots find the desert, which resulted in doubles, but was even for the other 16 holes. For the week, Ben was +11 for 54 holes and +14 on six holes, due to the dense desert.”
Arizona State won the tournament. The Sun Devils went 11-under (277) Sunday, finishing seven-under (857) for the event. ASU edged Georgia Tech by one stroke for the title.
The Sun Devils’ Alex Del Rey Gonzalez carded the lowest round of the tournament in the final round. His 65 (-7) propelled him to medalist honors, finishing 10-under (206) overall.
Gonzaga travels to Fresno, Calif., for the Nick Watney Invitational on Oct. 2-3. Live scoring from the San Joaquin Country Club will be available on GoZags.com.
