PALM DESERT, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team improved 10 strokes from Saturday's opening round and six strokes from the second round, but it wasn't enough Sunday as the Bulldogs finished last at the University of Wyoming Desert Classic.

Gonzaga shot a 310 Sunday, but 14 of the other 18 teams also showed improvement as the Bulldogs were unable to climb out of 19th at 946.

Unlike Saturday when the Bulldogs produced just three sub-80 rounds in the 36 holes, four of the five Bulldogs shot better than 80 on Sunday. Derek Cheney and Jason Azzarito each shot 76, and Bowdy Ehler and Francis Santiago each had 79.

Cheney was the top Gonzaga finisher at 233 with rounds of 76-81-76 to tie for 56th. >P> The inaugural Wyoming Desert Classic is being played on the same site as the PGA's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at the Classic Club. The course played to 7,305 yards, par 72 for the tourney.

First-day leader Colorado State University captured the team title with an 877, good for a 7-stroke victory over the University of Idaho.

Dan Wax of Denver University shot a final-round 68 to finish in a tie with Kevin Tucker of Washington State University at 213. Wax won the scorecard playoff by virtue of his 68, Tucker shooting a final-round 72.

Gonzaga will be idle until Oct. 20-21 when the Bulldogs compete at the Georgetown Intercollegiate in Washington, D.C.
