Montgomery Named Honorable Mention All-WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Gonzaga men's golfer Angus Montgomery was tabbed honorable mention All-West Coast Conference Tuesday. All-WCC First Team selections and each major individual award honorees were selected solely by the nine conference head coaches.
Montgomery tied for fifth at the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships in Provo, Utah. He made seven of his tournament-high 18 birdies in the third and final round. The senior finished the event at five-under par (211).
Montgomery appeared in seven events in 2016-17, finishing the season with a 74.71 scoring average. He had seven rounds of par or better, and was three-over relative to par. His five-under (67) third round in the conference championships was the third-lowest round in program history. His 211 (-5) total at the WCC Championships was the ninth-lowest three-round tournament total on the GU all-time list.
Montgomery finished his three-year career at Gonzaga with a 75.55 scoring average. He had 15 finishes at par or better, appearing in 22 events as a Zag. The Middlesborough, England native, had two Top-10 finishes at GU.
For the second straight year WCC Player of the Year honors were shared. BYU junior Patrick Fishburn and Pepperdine sophomore Sahith Theegala collected the hardware after posting impressive seasons. The WCC's two highest rated players entered the conference championship rated No. 35 and No. 17 respectively. Fishburn and Theegala, the 2016 WCC Freshman of the Year, each made their second straight appearance on the All-WCC First Team.
Pepperdine head coach Michael Beard earns WCC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season leading a lineup composed of four underclassmen to a No. 22 national ranking according to Golfstat.com. BYU's Rhett Rasmussen is the first Cougar to take WCC Freshman of the Year accolades and collected medalist honors at the Alister Mackenzie during his rookie campaign.
The 2016-17 All-WCC First Team features 11 student-athletes (due to a tie for the 10th and final spot) and nine rank in the top-250 nationally according to GolfStat.com. The team is comprised of no fewer than eight underclassmen, including five freshmen.
Two juniors -- Saint Mary's Perry Cohen and Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh -- each made their third straight All-WCC squad.
