Munetake Makes Run at Manoa Cup
June 21, 2017
The Manoa Cup is Hawaii's Amateur Match Play Championship. It's the oldest continuous golf tournament in Hawaii.
Munetake was even-par (71) during stroke play, receiving the sixth seed in the 64-golfer match play bracket for his performance. He made three birdies and 12 pars during the stroke play round. He was two-under on the course's nine Par-4 holes.
Munetake was tested in the opening round of match play, defeating Justin Chan in 19 holes. Chan was 1-up after the 17th hole, before Munetake won the final two holes. Munetake, an upcoming junior, trailed only once after the second hole to Trevor Arashiro in the second round. He boasted a 3-up lead in the matchup, before winning 2 and 1.
In the round of 16, Munetake never trailed to Remington Hirano, being 3-up again, before holding off a late rally to win 1-up. Munetake upset third-seeded Tyler Ota in the quarterfinals, 1-up. Munetake, a native of Wailuku, Hawaii, trailed early, being behind 1-up after Hole 6. But, he won the next three holes and wouldn't trail again.
Tenth-seeded Evan Kawai never trailed in the semifinal matchup with Munetake. The Zag won two holes, but Kawai advanced to the championship, 3 and 1. Andy Okita won the two-round tournament final over Kawai, 6 and 4.
Munetake was a co-medalist at the tournament in 2014. The Manoa Cup started in 1907, and it is still going strong. It began when Messrs Arthur F. Wall and James D. Dougherty donated a trophy cup to their Club, the old Manoa Golf Club in Manoa Valley sometime between late 1905 and early 1907. From 1979 to the present, there has been little changed in the running of the Manoa Cup. The Manoa Cup continues to be one of the most significant amateur tournaments in the U.S.
