PULLMAN, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's golf team is ninth after 36 holes Monday of the Palouse Collegiate hosted by Washington State University at Palouse Ridge Golf Course. The Bulldogs shot 607 on rounds of 302-305 and head coach Robert Gray said his top four players were steady on a day that featured strong winds and fast and firm greens. Senior Jason Azzarito shot 73-76 for a 36-hole score of 149 over the 7,308-yard, par 72 course and is tied for 24th heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. Senior Derek Cheney stands at 150 and a tie for after rounds of 73-77. Kyle Huus, playing No. 1, shot 79-73 for a 152 and freshman Travis Johnsen shot 79-73 for 152. "We struggled today with the tough conditions," Gray said. "With the exception of a couple bad holes I thought the top four were pretty steady. The experience of the upperclassmen saved the team a lot of shots today." Sacramento State University shot a 579 and holds a 1-stroke lead over the host Cougars and a 6-stroke advantage over the University of Idaho. Kevin Tucker of WSU has the individual lead after rounds of 72-66 for 138, good for a 2-stroke lead over Brad Bossio of Idaho who had rounds of 69-71 for 140. The tournament is the first men's collegiate tournament at Palouse Ridge since it opened in August, 2008. The Cougars hosted a women's tournament last fall. Tuesday's final 18 holes begin at 7:30 a.m.
